about me

Welcome to Lori Swerdlow Photography

Unique, Original Chicago Street Photography

Welcome and thanks for visiting. My site is full of images of where I am, where I’ve been, what I think and what I love to do.

I’m a native Chicagoan through and through and have been a street photographer and loving it for almost 12 years. Of course my drive and fascination is fueled by the events happening before me but especially by and with the gazillions of people who allow me to share their space with “our” stories of laughter, humor, history and sometimes-even tears.

If we haven’t met yet come see and hear me in the interview “Moving Mountains with MS” with talk show host Whitney Reynolds. I’m the “woman with a million expressions”! I chuckle every time I watch and I’m sure you will too! An anonymous quote on her site adequately states:

Sometimes you’ve been assigned this mountain to show others, it can be moved.”

And so, my 2019 began with a solo display in the honorable Maria Pappas, Cook County Treasurer’s office. It was my 2nd time there having had the opportunity to be part of a group show “The Art of Healing” 10 years earlier with Gilda’s Club Chicago.

In early July I was on site for the dismantling of the iconic Chicago Tribune sign at our historic Tribune Tower, 435 N. Michigan Ave. It was removed, sent out for refurbishing to be reinstalled as the building continues its transformation to the Tribune Tower Residence. Take a peek here at my “Trib Sign Dismantle” gallery.

Can you guess which image was named “Breaking News” in my “HELP ME NAME THIS PICTURE” CONTEST”? A tough choice after receiving potential titles from dozens of others, like you! See that and other stories in Lori’s Stories.

Other summer days were filled documenting our newest and greatest addition to the lakefront, Whispers at Oak Street Beach. Stop by for the food, the fun and revel in an aura of the tropics!

To cap off my 2019 and which I’m proudest of is the permanent installation of 7 of my images on the Concierge Wall in the Old Post Office, 433 W. Van Buren Street.

It's forty minutes from Mannheim to the Post Office."

10 years ago, I was fortunate to spend time in "Old Main" making pictures. It’d been vacant for 13 years prior to then and was clearly a once-in-my-lifetime experience! In 2016 the 601W Companies embarked on a massive redevelopment of this historic structure.

Great to see your photos of the "old" Old Main incorporated into the new.” - Matt Crawford

The photos are very moving; I could feel and smell the place. Well done!” - Marjorie David

See the entire Concierge Wall up close here.

Enjoy images from my “Inside The Old Chicago Main Post Office, 2009" collection here.

2020 is in full speed. My year will unfold with of course making pictures, being out and about, living life and so much more!

Enjoy yours and you can experience that too! My best, Lori

Artist's Statement

Do you agree we may not have or cannot take the time to immerse ourselves in or be part of "our moments"?

Undeniably, my street photography and other incredible photo opportunities bring me there. Facing MS forever and a day ago, at various times during my day I'd need to regenerate my nerves. Often enough, returning from work or whatnot I'd lie in the back seat of a cab or do some such to accommodate and forage ahead.

Fast-forward to 2007 as photography became my mobility and my passion as I tooled around on journeys (on my mobility scooter). "Scooting and shooting" let me look at, see and be part of "my all", expanding and delightfully sharing my visions along my way. My captures are of everything I see, do or become part of. People, nature, architecture or its demise, movement, stillness and any or everything else I encounter.

I've been told the curiosities my images elicit somehow stimulate the imagination and infuse an energy, humor and life force vital to us all. It's me … and it's for you.... Lori
